Support Our Homeless Street Outreach Program
The population of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in our community is increasing. On a single night in January 2018, an estimated 149 individuals were experiencing homelessness in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, a 17% increase over the previous year (Point in Time Count, January 24, 2018). Many individuals are not able to access emergency shelters and housing assistance program. Some of the barriers they face include distrust of service providers, lack of information about available services, and difficulty obtaining documentation to prove their eligibility for assistance programs.
The goal of the Street Outreach Program is to develop relationships with individuals experiencing homelessness who live on the streets, in camps, in abandoned buildings, and in other unsheltered situations. Every week, our Street Outreach Team takes to streets to locations where homeless individuals congregate. They offer peer recovery support, share information about how to navigate housing programs and other community services, and provide transportation assistance to appointments with service providers. They also provide backpacks with emergency supplies, such as bus tickets, nonperishable food items, toiletries, winter clothes, thermal blankets, and flashlights.
Donations received through this campaign will help Strength In Peers to provide individuals who are homeless transportation assistance to critical appointments and to purchase essential items for the backpacks. Your support can offer individuals who are homeless hope, support and advocacy so that they may reclaim their lives.
