Founded in 1928, Massanutten Regional Library serves the residents of Harrisonburg and Rockingham and Page Counties with seven branches located in Bridgewater, Broadway, Elkton, Grottoes, Harrisonburg, Luray and Shenandoah.
Library patrons have free access to a collection of over 393,000 items, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, ebooks, and more. MRL provides free internet access, as well as online research and learning resources, including tools for language learning, standardized test prep, and job search and resume writing. During the 2017-18 fiscal year, patrons of MRL borrowed 692,919 items and visited the library's branches more than 292,000 times.
Youth education and literacy is a primary focus of Massanutten Regional Library, which last year hosted 1,695 youth programs attended by 33,563 children and family members. Programs include Story Times for preschoolers, STEM activities for K-5th graders, special events and performances. MRL's "Prescription for Reading" initiative partners with pediatricians to distribute books to infants during well-baby visits, providing 924 books last year. Now in it's third year, the "MRL Student Access Card" provides free access to a suite of online resources for 21,000 K-12 students in the library's service area.
Annually, MRL hosts "Summer Reading Games," which is designed to counter the summer learning slide and keep children reading throughout the school holiday. In 2018, 4,369 children participated in "Summer Reading Games," and altogether they checked out over 123,000 items and read more than 39,240 hours during the months of June, July & August.
